Que sera sera...
Yeah well... that's it. Germany 0, Italy 2... the dream of the world cup championship, bursted in the last two minutes of a 120 minutes game... and what a great game. It was very exciting, two vey strong teams, but the Italian team simply had more resources in the end. They deserve their success just like Germany would have had. It's kinda depressing, sorry if it might sound exaggerated to some people here who don't like or don't know much about soccer, but it means a lot over here. During the last three weeks this team, this whole world cup has caused changes in the people around here in the way Germans look at their own country...
I've seen... people hanging German flags out of their windows, they drive around with little German flags on their cars, they put black-red-gold makeup into their faces, decorate their homes, their neighbourhood, they sing the national anthem, they are proud to be German... and that is something you do not see very much over here.
While many of my friends in the US probably observe a behavior like that at least once a year, on this day, on their Independance Day (or in some cases throughout the whole year), Germans pretty much never showed any pride in their country. "Good remember what that led to in the past?" some might say... and some actually said, but it's not that easy of a subject. After the terrible crimes committed in our past, Germans saw that they had no reason to be proud of their country... where so many terrible things happened. This feeling is transfered from generation to generation... my own grandfather's were still kids when the Second World Wat ended, still the feeling of guilt weighs heavy even on our generation... and that is good... at least I think it is. Shame is the best way never to forget or repeat a mistake one comitted. Unlike the common thought that Germans never dealt with their past, that this past is actually hidden from children (Yeah I've talked to people in the US who actually claim that or even report it on TV) Germany has come quite far concerning that. From the 8 years I had history classes back in school, 3 alone were reserved for the time from 1910 to 1945. Like I said there is nothing wrong with remembering the past and a good deal of guilt does not hurt either.. but what about the good things? What about the psoitive effects Germany and Germans had on this world... Pride... that was something nobody here even wanted to claim, fearing to be branded as a right wing idiot or a nazi. But this world cup so far changed things... people take pride in what Germany has achhieved... I'm not only talking here about the German team, but also about organizing all this, working together, having people come to this country and say "Hey, those guys are actually pretty nice." (not to mention: "You mean you guys eat and drink stuff BESIDES sauerkraut, sausage and beer? wow!")... I hope this process continues... I hope Germans can be a bit proud to be Germans again.

... now... I was talking about soccer wasnt I? <..< Sorry about that. Maybe the lost game just threw me a bit too deep into thoughts. ;P Well the games go on. Now that Italy is inthe final, I hope they win, so we can at least claim having lost against the champions. XP Go Italy!

If the Germans have one thing to be proud of, I'd nominate their output of power metal.

*chuckles* Sorry, I probably ignored that because it's not my cup of tea. But you're of course absolutely right. ;)

Being the oenophile/wine snob that I am, I'd sing praises about the blessing to white wine that is the Riesling grape.

Prost! ^^ Yeah that's an upisde too, but honestly I'm not a big white wine fan. I prefer a sweet red wine or rosé. I had this rosé last weekend from California... excellent taste... can't remember the name, but I should still have the bottle somewhere. You guys grow some fine grapes too. ;)

Almost certainly a white zinfandel, by far the most common rosé, even though serious wine drinkers pan it because more often than not it's mass-produced from the lower quality grapes.

Anyway, more relevant to the subject, my own heritage, if not my country of origin does contain a less-than-commendable history what with Mao Tse Tung and communism. Seems that that's what most non-Chinese identify us with as I got called "commie" pretty frequently as a kid. Nevertheless, on Chinese New Year, all the Chinese show a lot of pride in their heritage. Of course, it doesn't hurt that the Chinese invented gun powder, paper, and lord knows what else.

Big Hugs!

Sorry you guys didn't win buddy, but I'm glad to hear about your patriotism.

We must move onwards away from shame of our past. The past is not today some time ago. But Rather, the Past is literlly at different world.

Well, at least you didn't lose to France!

If I lived in Germany (somehow I feel as if I should be saying when I live there, since I have a strong feeling that's where I'll end up) I would become a true patriot. I'm proud of Germany already, and I've not even been there before.

Besides, that's where so much of the great music I listen to today (no, not Rammstein) comes from.

I get that as well, whenever I mention to anyone I listen to German metal. "Rammstein?" "Nooo!"

It's great that Germany can do patriotism properly, focussing on the things that actually bring them together as a people. I'm afraid I'm a little soured when it comes to the subject; over here, 'patriotism' usually involves a kind of false, enforced sense of togetherness, as though shouting drunkenly about St. George and 'Eng-ger-land' (and glassing those who don't share your inebriated enthusiasm) somehow represents good old-fashioned Britishness and is something that all right-thinking Subjects of Her Majesty should aspire to.

However, I don't think you need to feel guilty at all... all scars heal, given time. I don't think people will forget the mistakes made - the fact that Hitler practically made himself the poster child for Evil will see to that - but as time passes and more and more contact is made, people will see that that had nothing to do with the country, and everything to do with the attitudes involved. The German students I've spoken to have always been really nice, approachable people; your generation is doing a fine job of going out and showing, by direct action, how different Germany is now, and how much you have to be proud of.

D.F.

*noddles and hugs tightly* Thanks. :) I know there are many people like you who are free of any prejudices and know not to judge people by their nationality.
... and I can imagine what you mean by English "patriotism"... it was indeed quite impressive to see all the English fans root for their team and listening to a whole stadium singing "Rule Britannia" send shivers down my spine... but there's always a fine line. Some people overdo it... but you have people like that on every side.

*huggles* I hope I'll catch you on AIM sometime soon. I'll just try to IM you by chance. ;)

Germany has much to be proud of, great white wine (I like the really good sweet whites, not easy to find!) awesome food, cool music (new and old) funky sense of style (new and old), and hospitality!
Sure a bunch of bad shit happened under the Nazis and they played up the nationalism way too much. Because of that I think most Germans were afraid to show any national pride for fear of being seen as or associated with Nazis. The war has been over for a long time. The ones who were in charge and who did the crap a pretty much dead.
I am proud of my german heritage, and I wanted to Germany to win soooo bad, but shit happens! Next time maybe it will be Germany vs USA in the final!
PS: I really don't have a clue in soccer but the guy are cute and fun to watch! I watch sports for fun and the eye candy!
